The first Italian ice bar opens

Counter, glasses, walls, ceilings and floors – inside the first Absolut Ice Bar in Milan everything – up to the giant suspended light – is made from ice. A transparent screen 20 metres long made from special tempered glass resists heat loss to the outside and inside, where the average temperature is 5 degrees centigrade and where (after donning appropriate thermal overcoats, gloves and padded boots at the entrance) only up to 100 people are allowed. Maximum time of stay permitted: half an hour. The only drink on offer: vodka.

The first place of its kind in the capital of Lombardy and the second in the world, following the trend begun by the Jukkasjarvi ice hotel in Sweden, the Ice Bar requires constant maintenance. The ice, that perishes quickly, actually arrives directly from the River Torne in Sweden and every six months the bar has to be practically made over. The initiative comes from Alessandro Rossi, in partnership with the Icehotel in Lapland and Absolut Vodka, winning the contract as a result of an international competition, beating cities such as Paris and London.
