Geographic distribution

The muskrat is distributed over most of North America north of Mexico, although it does not occur in Florida, along a strip of the Atlantic Coast in South Carolina and Georgia, and in most of California and Texas. The muskrat has been introduced into many areas where it did not occur naturally.

Habitat

Muskrats live in freshwater and saltwater marshes, swamps, and along the borders of ponds, lakes, and streams. In the park they are found primarily along the larger streams below 2,400 feet.
