Disney has released a new look at the Wizards of Waverly Place revival, as a full series has been officially confirmed following a pilot episode.

Titled Wizards, the revival will go in production next month and is set to premiere later this year.

To mark the occasion, Disney has released a new image of Selena Gomez and David Henrie as Alex and Justin Russo, with her head on his shoulder, alongside a photo of them doing the same thing from back in the day.

"Making magic, then and now," the post's caption reads. "The new Wizards of Waverly Place series is coming this fall!"

Gomez will only appear in the premiere episode as a guest star, while Henrie plays a main role alongside newcomer Max Matenko, who plays Justin's youngest son Milo. Both Gomez and Henrie will serve as executive producers.

The revival series will kick off with Alex bringing a powerful young wizard named Billie (played by Janice LeAnn Brown) to Justin for help, but he's been living a normal, non-magical life. He soon learns that he will need to dust off his magical skills in order to safeguard the future of the Wizard World.

Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis said: "Wizards of Waverly Place captivated hearts with its spellbinding adventures and big laughs, creating unforgettable memories for kids and families everywhere.

"We can't wait to step back into the magical world of Wizards, inviting both longtime fans and a new generation to experience the enchantment alongside Selena, David, and our incredible cast and crew."

Wizards of Waverly Place can be streamed on Disney+. Wizards will premiere on the service later this year, and on Disney Channel in the US.

Joe Anderton is a freelance news writer and resident Welsh person at Digital Spy, having worked there since 2016.

In his time he's covered a host of live events, interviewed celebrities big and small and crowbarred a countless amount of great/awful (delete as appropriate) puns into articles.

A big fan of TV and movies both mainstream and obscure, Joe's main interest is in video gaming. Although particularly a PlayStation gamer, he plays across Xbox, Nintendo and PC/Steam Deck, and likes to keep tabs on many games he's not got the time to play.

Joe currently does not use Twitter, but he only ever used it to tell people to watch the film Help! I'm a Fish (which you really should do).
