James Gandolfini's drama pilot Criminal Justice has been turned down by HBO.

The actor was set to make a return to the cable network, six years after the series finale of his highly acclaimed drama The Sopranos.

The new show, set in New York City, was to be loosely based on a 2008 BBC mini-series, which starred The Hour's Ben Whishaw and was written by Peter Moffat.

According to Deadline, HBO executives have decided not to pick up the show based on a pilot written by Richard Price and directed by Schindler's List writer Steven Zailian.

HBO currently has several new shows in development, includingLost showrunner Damon Lindelof's Leftovers pilot.

A new series starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey called True Detective is also in the works.
