Hawaii Five-0 lead Scott Caan is writing, executive producing and starring in new drama Topangaland for CBS.

Having starred as Detective Sergeant Danny Williams on Hawaii Five-0 for nearly ten years, Caan will now play a laidback former policeman who works for a private detective agency owned by his father.

Caan's character will be "solving cases that take him from Malibu mansions to Topanga hippie communes to Venice back alleys and everywhere in between – all while navigating a thorny relationship with his dad and the rest of his unconventional family," according to Deadline.

The show is created by Benjamin Cavell, who has previously worked on Homeland, Justified and The Stand. Most recently, he created SEAL Team, which has run on CBS for four seasons, and is now moving to Paramount+ for its fifth.

CBS had reportedly been looking to bring Caan back to the network after his Golden Globe-nominated run on Hawaii Five-0, and the ensemble PI drama seemed a perfect fit.

Hawaii Five-0 was cancelled last year after ten seasons, all of which Caan starred in. While it wasn't officially confirmed why the series was axed, Caan and his co-star Alex O'Loughlin's contracts expired after the tenth season, leaving them free to move on from the show.

While Caan may have stayed given the option, O'Loughlin has been open about the toll the show had taken on his body, including a serious back injury he obtained in the first few seasons.

"I've been hurt really badly on this show," he told Collider in 2016. "I've now got some serious back issues, which I'm going back and forth to California to deal with.... I'm getting stem cell treatments in my spine so that I can pick my kids up."

This left many fans doubtful that he would sign on for an eleventh season. While CBS did reportedly consider continuing the series with Caan, assigning him a new partner to take O'Loughlin's place, the idea was scrapped.

Outside of Hawaii Five-0, Caan also starred in Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen as getaway driver Turk Malloy.

Hawaii Five-0 aired on CBS. Topangaland is yet to get a premiere date.
