Midsomer Murders is coming back for a whopping 19th series – but with some major changes.

Replacing Gwilym Lee as Neil Dudgeon's sidekick will be Nick Hendrix, whose previous credits include Marcella, Foyle's War and The White Queen.

Hendrix has been cast as DS Jamie Winter for six feature-length episodes of the long-running ITV crime drama.

Together, DCI John Barnaby and DS Jamie Winter will investigate a strange Neighbourhood Watch group, an eerily empty village, a cricket festival and a weird rabbit-and-guinea pig show.

"I'm genuinely thrilled to join this bastion of British TV," Hendrix said.

"It's a real privilege to be part of a hugely successful and much loved show and I am looking forward to stepping into the wonderful world of Midsomer."

Returning for this 19th series will be Manjinder Virk as Dr Kam Karimore and Fiona Dolman as Sarah Barnaby.

Nick Hendrix is the fifth actor to become a Barnaby assistant, following in the footsteps of Daniel Casey, John Hopkins, Jason Hughes and, of course, Gwilym Lee.

Neil Dudgeon joined back in series 13 as John Barnaby, an eventual replacement for cousin Tom Barnaby (John Nettles).

Midsomer Murders returns in 2017.
