Luther 2 hasn't officially been confirmed by Netflix, but Idris Elba has been teasing that a sequel will happen.

In July 2023, Elba said that he was "hoping" to make a sequel and then sounded even more positive in April 2024, but stopped short of announcing it.

"The chances are good. The chances are very good actually. I don't want to make any exclusive announcements, but it's looking good for old Johnny Boy," he teased when asked about the potential sequel.

Luther: The Fallen Sun certainly ended in a way that leaves it open for a sequel, so while we wait to see whether or not that happens, here's everything you need to know about a potential Luther 2 on Netflix.

Luther 2 potential release date: When could we expect to see Luther 2?

As mentioned above, Luther 2 – or whatever it'll be called – has yet to be confirmed by Netflix, so we don't have an official release date as of yet.

The first movie started filming in November 2021 and arrived in cinemas in late February 2023, before its Netflix bow on March 10, 2023.

Even if a sequel starts filming this year, the earliest we could probably expect to see Luther 2 is in late 2025 or early 2026.

But we're just speculating right now and things might move quicker for a follow-up movie.

Luther 2 cast: Who's coming back for Luther 2?

Well, it wouldn't be a Luther movie without Idris Elba as John Luther so he'll be back in the trench coat.

Elba, however, does see a potential future with somebody else in the role. "Maybe later down the line, when I’m too old, someone else will step in to play John," he noted when referring to the series as becoming James Bond-esque.

It feels unlikely right now, but stranger things have happened.

Outside of Elba, expect a sequel to bring back Dermot Crowley as Luther's former boss Martin Schenk after he reprised the role in the first movie.

Ruth Wilson didn't come back as Alice Morgan, but never say never to her return. "Well, we're an extended family and Ruth Wilson is an important part of it. It's a family I care about very much. So... who knows?," said creator Neil Cross of a potential Alice return.

We could also see the return of Cynthia Erivo as Luther's replacement, DCI Odette Raine, after she developed a grudging respect for Luther by the end of the movie.

Andy Serkis won't be back as David Robey though, the serial killer of the first movie, as he's very much frozen and dead.

Luther became more ludicrous as the series went on, but this feels too far even by the show's standards.

Luther 2 plot: How does Luther movie set up sequel?

Much like every Luther season, The Fallen Sun is largely self-contained. Luther tracks down Robey and puts an end to his murderous ways, but there is the pesky fact that Luther broke out of prison to do so.

After Luther kills Robey and reunites with Schenk, it looks like Luther is headed straight back to prison. However, after recovering from his injuries, Luther wakes up in a government safe house where he's greeted by Schenk.

A mysterious convey of cars arrives and Schenk has no idea who they really are, but thinks it suggests one thing. "I don't think you're going back to prison," he tells Luther. "A job offer, perhaps?"

Luther heads outside to meet civil servant Tim Cranfield (Guy Williams) who first congratulates Luther on a "commendable job" dealing with Robey, before telling him: "Chief would like a word."

We never find out who this "Chief" exactly is, but it perhaps wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say Luther might now be offered a kind of secret agent role more akin to James Bond than the DCI he once was.

That's where we could meet Luther in the follow-up movie, although there's every chance he might tell them where to stick their job and end up serving out his prison sentence anyway.

Luther 2 trailer: Any Luther 2 footage yet?

Unsurprisingly, since the sequel hasn't been confirmed, Luther 2 hasn't even begun filming yet so you'll be waiting a while for any footage.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is available to watch now on Netflix.
