Partygoers at the Rio carnival partied long into the night as dancers dressed in skimpy outfits strutted their stuff to mark the iconic event.

Rio de Janeiro's Holy Week festival is underway and millions are expected to join the party. Some 70,000 members of the public were in attendance at the Sambadrome stadium for the opening of the festivities, which runs until Saturday, February 17.

Mad music performances, revealing costumes and a host of huge floats all form part of what is considered the biggest and most famous carnival in the world. There were 12 samba schools competing for the coveted title of carnival champions across two nights of epic booty shaking.

Each school has an hour to impress, moving down the 700 meters of Marques de Sapucai. The jury judges the schools down to the finest detail, with points deducted for lacking flair or being out of sync.
