Identification

9 cm. Coppery green upperparts and flanks, white underparts and crissum, throat, face sides and crown vary from turquoise, green, blue or white according to subspecies, copper green tail with dark subterminal band, long, slightly decurved black bill, flesh-coloured base to the lower mandible.

Distribution

Brazil, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Paraguay, and Argentina.

Taxonomy

This is a polytypic species[1] consisting of 6 subspecies.

Sometimes C. v. rondoniae is accepted as full species. and Versicolored Emerald is placed in genus Agyrtria.

Subspecies

  • C. v. millerii:

Tropical eastern Colombia to southern Venezuela, eastern Peru and northern Brazil

  • C. v. hollandi:

Tropical southeastern Venezuela and (?) adjacent Guyana

  • C. v. nitidifrons:

Northeastern Brazil

  • C. v. versicolor:

Southeastern Brazil

  • C. v. kubtchecki:

Northeastern Bolivia to eastern Paraguay, southwestern Brazil and extreme northeastern Argentina

  • C. v. rondoniae:

Northern Bolivia and west-central Brazil (Rondônia)

Habitat

Semi-open habitats with some trees; urban areas.
