Red-winged Tinamou - BirdForum Opus

Rhynchotus rufescens

Identification

39–42·5 cm
Brown above barred with black, primaries strongly rufous. Throat white, foreneck and breast cinnamon in most races, remainder of underparts grey-brown barred with black on belly and flanks. Crown black.

Distribution

South America: found in Brazil south of the Amazon, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina; this species is resident.

Habitat

Dry grassy scrub and open forest in lowlands.

Taxonomy

Huayco Tinamou was formerly regarded as a subspecies of this species but is now accepted by most lists as full species.

Behaviour

Diet

Omnivorous. Their diet consists of insects, roots, shoots, seeds and fruit.

Vocalisation

Jaramillo describes the song of the two forms as "Pheeew weeu weeu" in Rhynchotus rufescens and "Wheee- cooo!" in Huayco Tinamou.
