Shiki: The Complete Series [Blu-ray]

Shiki begins during a hot summer when an alarming number of deaths occur in a quiet village. An epidemic is suspected, but as investigations continue and bodies pile up, a horrifying truth is revealed. All hell breaks loose when the villagers discover their loved ones are rising from the grave. Haunting, hallucinogenic, and unnerving, Shiki stares into the hearts of the hunter and the hunted.

Product Description

From the studio that brought you Black Butler and Fullmetal Alchemist emerges the psychological thriller that will send you to bed with a cross in hand.

When citizens of a secluded village begin dying off in alarming numbers, the sole hospital’s head doctor tries desperately to save his patients—but his efforts are in vain. Entire families are wiped out while others desert their homes. All hell breaks loose as the villagers discover their loved ones’ corpses are rising from the grave with an insatiable thirst for human blood. Haunting, hallucinogenic and unnerving to the core, Shiki stares into the hearts of both the hunter and the hunted. Who is safe when the urge to kill in order to survive blurs the line between man and monster?

A Masterpiece of Eldritch Horror and Harrowing Morality

A Masterpiece of Eldritch Horror and Harrowing Morality
Shiki is definitely not a show for everyone. However, those who are able to appreciate its themes, pacing, and characterization will find an anime masterpiece of horror and morality which refuses to leave its viewers comfortable in simplistic ways of approaching moral dilemmas. As many people will have already noted, the first half of Shiki starts off with a gradual progression which is intentional by design; the first half of the show is attempting to carefully introduce and develop the characters and atmospheric milieu for the horrifying actions and unsettling decisions which characterize the latter half of the series. The show’s deliberate build-up and storytelling were absolutely enchanting, and I found myself completely drawn in from start to finish. Although the animation can be considered merely adequate when compared to other shows from that time, the art direction, dialogue, characters (albeit a few “annoying” ones), soundtrack (one of the best around), plot progression, and conclusion are all stellar and warrant repeat watchings to reflect on the philosophical themes contained in each episode. As I want to emphasize, Shiki is not for everyone; people who like their shows fast, furious, and vapid (like a generic battle shounen), who like mindless gore fests, who like conventional heroes with black-and-white morality, and who are easily disturbed by violence and moral quandaries should probably steer clear of this one. This story is told in sophisticated and deliberate manner and makes no concessions for people who want clearly defined good guys vs. bad guys. As other reviewers have pointed out, there are no winners or heroes in this story of survival and vengeance, only losers. If any of this sounds intriguing to you, please give Shiki a chance. I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed with this vastly underappreciated eldritch horror gem. Even better, the entire series is available in a highly affordable format through the S.A.V.E. series, making access to this series far easier than in the past.*Note: I had the unfortunate experience of receiving two copies of this product in a damaged state when buying from Amazon. The top portion of the blu ray case was badly cracked on both products. (Please refer to pictures featured.) I did have to call Amazon customer service to resolve the issue before getting a copy which was (mostly) undamaged. Amazon was helpful, but having to call about damaged products is always inconvenient. My third copy has a cracked case, but it is not damaged as badly as the first two. I want to mention this as a forewarning of my experiences for any would-be buyers. Use your own discretion.

I'll admit, I didn't like this show at first, and stopped watching before I finished it. A few years went by, and I tried it again, this time watching the entire series through. I LOVED IT!!! So much so that I immediately bought it on Blu-ray and watched it two more times. Actually, I loved it so much, when a seller caused problems on a different site, I went ahead and bought 7 copies out of spite. No regrets.

The show focuses on an entire rural community, so the first watch-through you're going to learn all the characters and their own individual stories. I think what made this so much more engrossing my second time was knowing the characters, and seeing the good and bad in each of them. The writing is great, and really provides a dark take on humanity, as the humans and vampires clash and purposefully separate themselves from their own friends and families. The characters are all very diverse, and the more you pay attention to their interactions, the more the story progression makes sense. Everyone has their sane moments, and slowly slip into madness at different periods.

The English dub is actually really good, and even though the art style annoyed me at first, I've come to absolutely adore it. The crazy hairstyles help the characters stand out, while the basic, boring landscapes emphasize just how rural and plain everything in the town is. I think it makes for a great balance, and keeps the focus where it is meant to be, on the humans and vampires.

If you like gore, you will love the two OVA episodes. I had not seen them the first time watching the series online, but this set includes those two episodes where they fit into the story, towards the very end of the show. These two episode have so much more gore and psychotic episodes than the entire rest of the series. By this point in the show, everyone has lost their sanity, and the result is pure, unadulterated chaos. The series is so much better with these episodes, and I'm so thankful for Funimation for placing them in order, rather than at the end or under Special Features.

The reversible cover is great, and although the spine of the box doesn't say Shiki on the one cover, it does have the title on the very back. I ended up placing this on my shelf so the back is visible, so it's not even an issue to me.

Definitely recommend this to anyone who loves horror, gore, and human psychology. It's a great mix and makes for a really fun ride, especially at the very end of the series. I'm still kicking myself for not getting into this sooner. It's such a great series and deserves to be watched over and over again.

Me gustó mucho.
Buen final y divertida serie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Brilliant
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 10, 2015
It's hard to talk about this series without revealing spoilers as this show does a great job with the mystery genre. I bought this series with the intention of having no idea what it was about, apart from what I had seen in a fan-made trailer on youtube. A quiet village way out in the Japanese countryside, far from city life and civilisation, is suddenly plagued by an unfathomable illness taking the lives of one family after another. The village doctor, Ozaki strives to unravel the mystery of these deaths.

A must-watch for any anime fan who enjoys bloody horror, a good mystery, and sympathy for the devil...so to speak.

This bluray/DVD combo was an absolute steal for around £15. HMV was selling the DVD only version for £40.
(A multi-region blu-ray player is the best investment I ever made.)
