3.0 out of 5 stars Not so bad...
Reviewed in Italy on January 31, 2024
I buyed this book for having a good image reference on that particular site on Mars for a research, and it was interesting to retrace the footprints of the discovery and sci-fi speculations on it.
The part of geometric theories regarding the displacement of objects took the majority of the book, and I would like to see more high-quality images of the famous "face" of Mars and its "pyramids".

5.0 out of 5 stars An up-to-date analysis of an enduring enigma on the sands of Mars
Reviewed in Spain on January 20, 2022
This is the only monographic book that I know that is devoted to an insightful analysis of an enduring enigma on Mars. In 1976, NASA's Viking orbiter adquired an image of the surface on Mars that, for many years, captivated the imagination of many scientists as well as amateurs: the famous Face on Mars. It was relegated to ostracism with the new images of Mars Global Surveyor, but a mystery remained: just a handful of small mounds on the open plains in the near vicinity of the Face, seem to defy logics and common sense, displaying a very accurately ordered layout. A geometrical disposition that no geologist has been able to explain, and seem to have many levels of hidden knowledge. Now, for the first time, a captivating book compiles all the evidence that the mounds enigma deserves a deeper look. Lots of colour photographs, diagrams, careful discussions, and some historical photos of the late Dr. Horace W. Crater, main researcher on the topic, as well as some of his colleagues. This book is a gem for any enthusiast of the Cydonia mystery and any person wanting to know some of the most ellusive mysteries on Mars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A serious and important book about a remarkable discovery
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 1, 2020
This book contains the strongest evidence yet that there are unresolved questions about Mars past history. This is not a sensationalist book about random rocks, imaged by rovers, that happen to look vaguely like some living creature. Instead it sets out to reveal the discovery of the remarkable geometry of some mounds in the Cydonia region which has a very high probability of being artificial. Written and published by the president of The Society for Planetary SETI Research and containing the story of the discovery and subsequent analysis, it uses some very clear coloured diagrams which anyone with a basic knowledge of geometry can understand.
The book opens with an introduction, taking the reader from the 1976 Viking observations and the original analysis made by the physicist the late Dr Horace Crater (Professor Emeritus at the University of Tennessee Space Institute) through to the contributions of Mr Ananda and Professor Stanley McDaniel (Professor Emeritus, Sonoma State University). There are quite a few personalities involved and there are photographs and some personal details. In fact it covers a lot more than just the mound geometry, so it is not the dry read that you might suspect.
It then goes on to more recent high-resolution images and the consequent expansion and refinement of the discovery.
Things get a little harder to understand in chapter three but by now you may be interested enough to make the effort. If not just carry on with the rest of the book.
To the authors credit he does not speculate or make claims that have no solid foundation but leaves it up to the reader to decide. He even includes some critical views.
I think that this is an important book because this work is relatively unknown and deserves a wider audience.
