Madagascan Hissing Cockroach Natural History

Size

This species grows to between 5-9 cm (2- 3.5 inches).

Habitat and Distribution

As their name suggests these cockroaches inhabit the forests of Madagascar and live in hollow logs.

Age

They have a lifespan of 18 months.

Diet

These herbivores scavenge on the forest floor for food such as fallen fruit.

Threats

This species had not yet been evaluated by the IUCN.

Groups and Breeding

Female Madagascan Hissing Cockroaches create a cocoon-like egg case (ootheca) and carry the eggs inside their bodies. They can have up to 60 nymphs.

Interesting Facts

They hiss when they feel threatened. To do this they force air out of their spiracle (a hole on their back used for breathing) quickly.
