The spotted nightjar is one of three nightjars that occur in Australia. It is found over much of inland Australia away from humid coastal areas. They are active at night and cryptic during the day. Finding this one in broad daylight was very lucky. This sighting was used as evidence to formally add this species to the bird list of the Canberra region
