Description

PNW evergreen conifer.  Douglas fir is described as being one of the most important and valuable tree species for its sturdy lumber.  The tree itself is beautiful with its emerald green needles, lovely craggy bark, unique cones and its stately size where it can reach 60 m tall in optimum growing conditions in the wild.  Pyramidal shaped when young and when ancient (400 years or better) takes on a flat topped form which is perfect for bald eagle nesting sites.  Seed is from the coastal type. P. menziesii var menziesii.

How to germinate Pseudotsuga menziesii seeds:

Soak seed 24 hours.  Thinly sow 3mm deep and cold stratify 30 days.  Give 20C to germinate. You can save space by baggie sowing seed in moist medium in the fridge, then give gentle warmth and prick out seedlings.  Use deep pots of well draining humus rich acidic soil for nice root development as these do grow quickly to a nice size in a few years and makes the perfect Christmas tree.
