Trial by comics: Quetzalcoatl, The feathered serpent God

in #elegance6 years ago (edited)

What’s up, everyone? :D

This is my second entry to the #trialbycomics contest. This week's theme is Mythology, so I spent many hours looking for creatures on the internet XD

Quetzalcoatl was one of the most important gods in the ancient Mesoamerica. Its name comes from the Nahualt language and is composed of two words: quetzal which means feathered bird and coatl which means snake. In other civilizations, it's known by the name of Kukulcan or Gucumatz.

The origin of this God goes back to the Olmec civilization. During the centuries in which this God was adorned, Quetzalcoatl was seen as the God of vegetation, of life and water. This was indispensable for the farmers, that's why they referred to him as the God of Creation, a giver of life.

Here you can see the head sculpted in rock of the God Quetzalcoatl

This God is associated with Tezcatlipoca a lot. The first one is a giver of life and the second one created the world. Quetzalcoalt is also called White Tezcatlipoca. Some believe that these gods are twins.

As I did with Ammit (my first entry), I didn't worry about the lines and I wanted to give both drawings a rough look. To be honest, I had no idea what I was doing, haha. I found a way to simulate reptile skin and draw it in a short time because I didn't want to spend hours making the skin of the snake.

Well, that’s all for today. Hope you liked it. Bye, guys! <3

Wow amazing art.

Thank you! :D

would you look at that, it's so detailed! You said you found a way to draw snakes skin in a short time, I want some of that secret information too hahah :D

Sure!

I'm bad explaining, but I hope you understand me, haha. What you have to do is make a line like in number 1, but avoiding that the marker enters totally in contact with the sheet. Press and quickly separates while doing the line that created the effect you see in the number 2. To finish, you have to do the same, but with a darker color and ends up making semicircles as in number 3. This is definitely faster than doing scale by scale. It's not a super technique but it works well with markers :D

Sorry for the dirty sheet, haha. It's one of the sheets I use to test colors :P

Thanks for showing me this! I always love seeing 'behind the scenes' of how artist figure out how to make things work. And this is a very neat technique for someone like me, I like how snakes look, but drawing that many scales scare me a lot haha :D

You're welcome! :D

Do I see markers, crayons, and colored pencils?

The rough-ness is working both of your entries, by the way. Also, the hatching before you overlayed the inking (appears you did circular motions) simulates scales well enough for my eyes. :-)

Thank you! :D

For this drawing, I only used markers although in some parts, it looks as if I had used colored pencils :P

It definitely does, especially from this resolution. It's almost sly of you to utilize a single medium as if its another. :-P

Interesting photography of Dragon..
