Sekkan Sugi

Slower growing than the species and almost columnar.  The leaves are a sulfur yellow on this outside, but green inside where the foliage is shaded from the sun. It makes a great foundation plant for the garden with wonderful contrasting color.  The tips of leaves are almost white on top of yellow. Brighter yellow in full sun, but needs some shade protection in hot climates.  One of our most noticed conifers! Hardy to zone 6.

Recently in a blog by Talon Buchholz of Buchholz Nursery in Oregon, I read this statement "For years it was known in the trade as 'Sekkan sugi', but the sugi suffix is redundant redundant. It basically says Cryptomeria Sekkan Cryptomeria if you see what I mean." We will continue to leave the sugi at the end for now, but at some point may drop it.
