The Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine is a very attractive, small tree that naturally develops a flat-topped, umbrella-like silhouette. A slow grower that's great for small gardens. Older bark exfoliates, exposing patterns with various shades of reddish brown. Grows best in full sun and well-drained soil. To maintain a tidy form and dense structure, copious spring candling in the spring and aesthetic pruning throughout the year may be required. The result can be brilliant. Tanyosho pines are classic choices for formal and Japanese gardens. Garden size is 6' tall and 4.5' wide, but it can eventually grow to 12' tall or more, and 18' wide, depending on how much candling and pruning is done. Hardy to Zone 4.
