The Wall Museum East Side Gallery in Berlin | Discovering Germany

Located adjacent to the Berlin Wall on the east side of the city, The Wall Museum is an impressive multimedia exhibition that highlights the infamous history of the Berlin wall; what it was, how it effected the country and its people, and what it represented in Germany and the world during the 20th century.

This informative museum is spread throughout thirteen staged rooms, and uses more than 100 projectors, screens and interactive displays. It brings its visitors from the end of World War II, through the division of Germany, and the cruel realities of the building of the wall.

Emotional film interviews with those who were affected are also used in the exhibit. These stories tell of those having to leave their flats within a few hours notice, to border patrol guards who had to shoot those who tried to cross the Wall, as well as interesting perspectives from both sides of the wall- East and West.

As for myself, the most moving segments of the exhibit were the incredible moments which lead to the fall of the Wall, and the re-unification of Germany and its people. It brought me back to watching in awe of the Berlin wall being torn down on the news, while I was a teenager in 1989.

I have always been fascinated with German and Eastern European history, especially the last century’s events. As a traveler, I have been incredibly interested in seeing these once closed off Eastern European countries open up to tourism, and the rest of the world.

If you plan on visiting Berlin, I recommend a couple of hours at the Wall Museum East Side Gallery even if you are knowledgeable of its history. The exhibits bring the history, the politics, and the stories to life; especially while being in the vicinity of its historical happenings.
