The Blacktip Reef Shark, scientifically known as Carcharhinus melanopterus, is often misidentified as the Common Reef Shark, which is a somewhat greater threat to humans.
Despite this confusion, however, the Blacktip Reef Shark is not a normal threat and is generally not aggressive towards humans.

It is unfortunate that the Blacktip Reef Shark has been unfairly maligned due to mistaken identity. However, it is important to recognize the vital role it plays in the marine ecosystem and to appreciate its unique beauty and characteristics. As we continue to learn more about this fascinating species, we can work to protect and preserve it for future generations to enjoy. The Blacktip reef shark is also very shy by nature, but in habitats where there are also many divers and snorkelers, it can get used to people and ignore their presence, so you can get really close.

This particular illustration on which the poster is based of the Blacktip Reef Shark has been photographed and edited from an old fish book dating back to 1903.
