Habitat: We can find this species near streams, rivers, lakeshores and also mangroves and rocky coasts. Distribution: The species is reported from extreme southwestern United States to northen Chile and central Argentina. Natural History Notes: The Green kingfisher is the commonest kingfisher species reported in Panama. It is usually found alone or in pairs and will be often observed perched on rocks. Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 7 inches and 8 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The part above is metallic green with a thin white collar and many small white dots on the wings. On each side of the tail, we can see a patch of white. The part below is white and a large band colored chestnut, crosses the chest. The male will show some green spots on the flanks, whereas the female will have two thin green bands across the chest and also some green sports on the flanks.
