Even while under Brainiac’s insta-genius influence, you’d be hard pressed to add up all the times Clark, Chloe, Lois, Lana have died and come back to life on “Smallville.” But according to Michael Ausiello, two characters will die — and stay dead — in this May’s season finale.

He says, “One character qualifies as a ‘Smallville’ vet… the other one, not so much.” I don’t know about you, but in my mind, the only two veterans left playing for the Smallville Sluggers are Chloe Sullivan and Lois Lane. Now, there would be a small uproar if they killed off Lois. Erica Durance has the best job security in the world, killing her is just not an option.

Allison Mack, on the other hand, doesn’t play a character that exists within the pre-written Superman mythology. And an episode from earlier this season called her longevity into question. But when Allison spoke with PopWrap in February, it certainly sounded like she wasn’t going anywhere: PW: Do you ever worry that since Chloe Sullivan doesn’t exist in the pre-existing Superman mythology that she’s still expendable?

Allison: That definitely went through my mind the first few seasons, like, what is my purpose? But I think I’ve made myself too invaluable to the show at this point. Once Chloe found out Clark’s secret, I recognized the importance of my character in the show as it was being written now.

Not only that, but Allison’s contract includes the upcoming ninth season. So perhaps Michael’s long-term description doesn’t refer to eight years — but three. That’s how long Aaron Ashmore has been living in Metropolis as Jimmy Olsen. And considering this season focuses on Chloe’s relationship with purported Superman killer Doomsday and there are rumblings that she provides solace for the murderer when “Smallville” returns on March 12, accidentally killing her husband could provide an interesting arc for Chloe in year nine.

As for the lesser death, take your pick: The Green Arrow, Tess Mercer and Davis Bloom are all on the chopping block. Who do you think will be joining Pa Kent on that great farm in the sky?
