An Oklahoma astronaut says he remembers late astronaut Gene Cernan as a dear friend.

Cernan died Jan. 16 at the age of 82. He was the last of only a dozen men to walk on the moon. Weatherford-native Thomas P. Stafford flew two space flights with Cernan.

"I've lost the brother I never had." Stafford said. "We lived through several life and death experiences in those missions."

Cernan was a veteran of three space flights.

"I will never forget our great friendship and trust we developed for one another," Stafford said.
