wonderful mature trees at the Dawes garden. They are easily seen from the
roadway and with
a backdrop of large weeping white pines and many other rare conifers, these are
a heavenly sight! Note the single trunk in contrast with f. umbraculifera.

ht: 3m in most gardens but plants reach 5m in 40-50 years.
ha: upright-arching, denser, umbrella-shaped with a top wider
than the base of multiple orange-barked trunks. It is favorite
ha: in Japanese gardens for this reason. Older plants are more
globose with age.
frq: The clone(s) seen in Western gardens often cones heavily,
weakening the plants and making them succumb to
frq: drought or cold.
ns: Kitamura recognizes this as BOTH a wild and garden plant and
