'Glauca Pendula'
JC Raulston Arboretum. Summer 2002.
Chamaecyparis thyoides 'Glauca Pendula' is blue and semi-drooping, not like a Nootka cultivar but still graceful and hanging with some age. You'd not consider it much of a weeper, upright or otherwise, for some years. Age brings perfection to this clone and all of us must wait. Good genetics are sometimes hidden from the young. The noble species is hardly memorable until 40 years have rolled around and the non-Andely type cultivars are much the same.
Where it is experienced quickly is a closeup of the the richness of the waxy coating. The glaucous icing that coats the intermediate foliage that is neither sharp nor fully soft. There are hints of the more familiar charm of C. pisifera Squarrosa Group clones but with more class I think. You sense a truly great plant is in the making. The fluffy Sawara and the vigorous cascading Nootka give a quicker fix and more bold beauty. Here is something to wait for, to savor over the decades of our mutual lives, and plant for another generation. There is hardly a better goal in the making of a conifer garden. LCH.
