Jack pine (Pinus banksiana) is the pine species with the widest distribution in North America.

Its mode of reproduction is largely based on forest fires.

The heat of the fire melts the resin that seals the jack pine cones, thereby releasing seeds, which then germinate quickly.

A jack pine can accumulate seeds for more than 10 years in its cones.
