Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Nidifera'

'Nidifera' is quite unique for an Alaskan Cedar as the branching is more refined and showy with grey-green feathery foliage. When staked upright at early age it is said that this Alaskan cedar selection creates a spreading conical shape rare reaching higher than 8ft in height. Others describe the form as more spreading and shorter, which I can only guess is leaving this selection unstaked creating its natural form. When grown this way 'Nidifera' may reach 4-5 ft in height by 5-6 ft in width in 10 years. 'Nidifera' was found in the late 1800's by the Rovelli Brothers in Italy.

Picea omorika 'Golden Midget'

Picea omorika 'Golden Midget' is a unique selection by Buchholz Nursery. It is a smaller pyramidal shaped Serbian spruce selection that may reach 3 ft in height by 2 ft in width in 10 years. 'Golden Midget' has nice green color to the needles, but these needles have a golden yellow cast to them. This creates a glowing like effect on this smal evergreen. 'Golden Midget' is quite a special tree to add to your garden.

Picea pungens ‘Corbett'

Picea pungens 'Corbett' is a nice true dwarf conifer. The compact habit and smaller size make ‘Corbett’ ideal for smaller spaces and containers. Picea pungens ‘Corbett’ is globose while young, becoming more pyramidal with age. ‘Corbett’ may reach 4 ft in height by 3 width in 10 years. Not to be confused with ‘Jack Corbit’, Picea pungens ’Corbett’ was found as a witches broom in Corbett, Oregon.

Taxodium distichum 'Falling Waters'

'Falling Waters' is a bald cypress with an exceptional weeping habit. 'Falling Waters' should be staked at early age, at which point it will often develop a leader of which the weeping growth will cascade off of. 'Falling Water's is an excellent bald cypress to use near a pond, where it can grow out over the pond and provide a uniquely shaped deciduous conifer in the garden and landscape.

Acer palmatum 'Sweet Lorraine'

'Sweet Lorraine' is a brand new selection of weeping laceleaf with reticulated variegation. In the spring, 'Sweet Lorraine' leafs out with a rose pink color to the leaves. The veins of the leaf are a darker green, making the etching effect fairly dynamic on a laceleaf. During the summer, the leaves are a lighter green. Fall color on 'Sweet Lorraine' is a bright yellow to orange. 'Sweet Lorraine' is expected to reach 4 ft in height and with in 10 years. Make sure to give 'Sweet Lorraine' protection from the hot afternoon sun. 'Sweet Lorraine' was found as a chance seedling and introduced by our good friend and mentor, Talon Buchholz.

Acer japonicum 'Giant Moon'

***

Acer palmatum 'Livy'

'Livy' is a newer dwarf red Japanese maple selection from Canada. The habit is upright and dense, almost like a purple-maroon colored "Mikawa-type". During the summer, a translucent-like emerald green comes into the leaf that makes 'Livy' glow. 'Livy' is expected to reach 5-6 ft in height and width in 10 years. Fall color on 'Livy' is a bright red.

***

Acer palmatum 'Nebula'

'Nebula' is a brand new selection of reticulated Japanese maple with an extraordinary reticulated variegation to the leaves. This ghost-like Japanese maple has pink new growth that radiates with lime green, while also displaying the veins of the leaf in a very prominent way. The foliage turns to bright green with darker veins. Fall color is a bright red to maroon red. 'Nebula' is a brand new selection by our friends at Buchholz Nursery. 'Nebula' is expected to reach 8 ft in 10 years. Give 'Nebula' protection from the hot afternoon sun for best colors.

Acer palmatum 'Lemon Lime Lace'

'Lemon Lime Lace' leafs out in the spring as a beautiful yellow-green. During the summer the leaves mature to a chartreuse green but has the yellow-green new growth with each flush. This yellow and green display is where this weeping laceleaf selection gets its name 'Lemon Lime Lace'. Found by the late Del Louks, 'Lemon Lime Lace' may reach 4 ft in height by 6 ft in width in 10 years. Fall color on 'Lemon Lime Lace' ranges from yellow to orange.

***

Acer palmatum 'Climate Change'

'Climate Change' is a unique new selection by Talon Buchholz of Buchholz Nursery in Gaston Oregon. The leaves are smaller and the growth is spreading and almost twisting. This creates a uniquely broad Japanese maple that seems to have a smaller habit. 'Climate Change' is a newer maple selection for us. When we visited Buchholz Nursery in June, it was the first time that we had saw this newer cultivar by Talon Buchholz. Since this Japanese is so new, many attributes for this selection are still to be evaluated.

***

Acer palmatum 'Amagi shigure'

'Amagi shigure' leafs out in the early spring as a bright pink-red with deep purple veining. This is by far one of the best of the Ghost-like maples with a heavy and consistent reticulated variegation. Fall colors are bright orange reds. 'Amagi shigure' can reach 8-10 ft in 15 years.

***

Acer palmatum 'Rite of Spring'

'Rite of Spring' leafs out the early spring as a bright red, turning to a bold red for the summer. Fall color is a bright crimson red. 'Rite of Spring' is fairly narrow growing reaching about 8-10 ft in 10 years by 4-5 ft wide. This new introduction from Buchholz and Buchholz Nursery is sure to be "Rite" for your garden.

Acer palmatum 'Tobiosho'

Named after Milt Tobie in 1982, who found and selected this amazing Japanese maple, this green upright is vigorous, forming a broad canopy often wider than it is tall. It may reach 8-9 ft in height by 12 ft in width in 10 years. This Japanese maple has one of the most outstanding fall colors of any of the palmatum cultivars. 'Tobiosho' starts out with a bright golden yellow in the fall. Just as quickly as the Japanese maple tree is engulfed in bright gold, oranges begin to spread throughout the tree. At the point where it seems like yellow may be taken over by orange, bright scarlets start to appear on the tree giving a multi-colored autumn display that is second to none. 'Tobiosho' is an amazing selection of Japanese maple that adds a lot to the garden or landscape.

***

Acer palmatum 'Green Mist'

'Green Mist' is a small weeping green laceleaf Japanese maple that will reach 5 ft by 7 ft in 10 years. The fall color is bright neon yellow.
The tree in the photo is the original 'Green Mist' at Red Maple Nurseries in Lima, Pennsylvania. The man in the photo is our good friend, Billy Schwartz, who studied maples under Dick Wolff, who introduced this tree.

Acer japonicum 'Ao jutan'

'Ao jutan' is the closest thing there is of the japonicums to a laceleaf cascading type. The leaf itself has lobes and sublobes that are reminiscent of your typical Acer palmatum dissectum but on a larger japonicum leaf. This helps distinguish this selection at young age from 'Green Cascade'. Its name 'Ao jutan' translates directly as "blue green weeper". As this selection matures, it reaches 2 ft in height by 5-6 ft in width making it one of the shortest and most wide-spreading dissectums. Found as a chance seedling by Ed Wood and introduced by Talon Buchholz, this Acer japonicum is the ideal laceleaf. The japonicums hold onto their leaves for about 2 weeks longer than most of the palmatums, which is why the Japanese often use them for fall color plantings. In autumn, 'Ao jutan' turns to bright oranges, as deep reds to purples slowly engulf the leaf to a create a true splendor in the garden.

Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Blauer Eichzwerg'

'Blauer Eichzwerg' is a spectacular silver-blue foliaged dwarf member of the giant redwoods. This evergreen selection was an introduction from Austria around 1988. The name tranlsates as "blue oak dwarf", which apparently was named after the originator's hometown. The grey to blue color on this dense dwarf giant redwood is quite striking. 'Blauer Eichzwerg' may reach 6-7 ft by 3-4 ft in width in 10 years. 'Blauer Eichzwerg' is good in zones 6-9.

***

Acer palmatum 'Black Lace'

'Black Lace’ is a deep dark burgundy Japanese maple with a heavily divided matsumurae leaf. This division of the lobes on each leaf gives a lacy and ornamental feel. The deep black burgundy leaves turn to a bright scarlet red in the fall. ‘Black Lace’ may reach 10-12 ft in height by 7 ft in width in 10 years. ‘Black Lace’ was found and introduced by Jan Willem Wezelenburg of the Netherlands.
