Die Wache, Az őrszem, La centinela,
early on there's a scene with a loud opera singer shrillingly making herself heard at a party and two scenes later you'll hear some early 90s rap music trumpeting through the halls of the very same party, and that's the perfect image of how all over the place this movie is.
Found this casually streaming on Arte.tv... European streaming really is something else.
A strange mix of genres and tones, very ambitious and heartfelt, not exactly unsuccessful but at times quite confusing. The great performances from literally everyone involved make it all worthwhile. I wish Fabrice Desplechin had acted more, he is the absolute MVP here. These days he's a diplomat. Ok!
For a debut feature film, this is pretty damn impressive (then again, to be honest I'm not sure why I would expect anything less from a director as preternaturally talented as Arnaud Desplechin). It might not have quite the same level of maturity or tonal control as his later masterpieces My Sex Life... or How I Got Into an Argument and Kings and Queen, but it still feels like an essential piece of his oeuvre, both in the ways that it hints at the filmmaker Desplechin would become, but also for how unique and atypical it is of his characteristic later work.
Although the film features many of the actors who would go on to feature in My Sex Life...…
finding this one difficult to write about. desplechin's debut feature, having previously only seen "a christmas tale", was not what i expected. a conspiracy thriller that displays the same willingness to cut and move around in fluid and jarring ways during the drama and the casual conversations alike. always somewhere between a pan and a tracking shot. clearly directed by a young man - trying to do everything at once, all the layers - but in trying it often succeeds, or at least has a much better hit rate than most debuts. the most post-soviet french film i've ever seen.

What a bizarre idea to build a missing persons case out of an unknown head, in what appears to be a statement about France's complicity in disappearing Russian scientists. Emmanuelle Devos's appearance is but a flicker of what's to come in her partnership with Desplechin; Amalric has like two lines. Some good lessons about camera placement and cutting for performance, but this is more or less told straight, despite the lacunae in the plot, such as it is, fractured by the intertitles and the loose ends left frayed.
