1952 ‘Fanfan la Tulipe’ Directed by Christian-Jaque
Fanfan is a young handsome peasant. He joins the army to escape marriage because a gypsy girl predicted he will get glory and the king's daughter as a wife. But the gypsy girl was in fact Adeline, the daughter of the recruiting officer. Once he has discovered the stratagem, Fanfan refuses to forget this dream and decides to fulfill the destiny of the fake prediction.

Irreverent and cute as a button, swashbuckling silliness. The title has intrigued me for 50 years -- now I know!
Hmmm. I love a swashbuckler but this was a little too slapstick and farcical for my taste? Though Gérard Philipe certainly had the charm to pull this off, sometimes I was a touch bored. But I really watched this for Gina Lollobrigida of course, and it's the earliest of her roles that I've seen!

For our first Tuesday movie night we wanted a film we could watch to honour the memory of Gina Lollobrigida who died in Rome on 16 January. None of us owned any of her movies but this film, from the ones in my local library, looked interesting for a few reasons.
Writer/director Christian-Jacque’s costume drama has five credited co-writers and while that can often be a signifier of screenplay difficulties (too many cooks etc), the story rolls out at a cracking pace and, while the humour didn’t really jell for us, you can see why it was a huge hit in both French and foreign markets. Film School Drop Outs – Weekly Challenge 2017 (Week 4 - Genre - Action - Swashbuckler)
Well, I don't think I've ever seen a swashbuckler before, unless you count (which you probably should) The Princess Bride. No classical ones though. I thought of picking one of the standards, but this is one of those movies titles where I admit of Criterion's strong guiding hand in my continuing film education. This always seemed like a choice out of left field for them, but it really does feel like some kind of lost form of filmmaking, so I concede that it is definitely relevant to the collection.
The farcical war setting allows for some really droll voice-over. It has a great formula of laughs-action-laughs-action-etc with pretty consistent momentum, and a well-connected series of setpieces leading up to the finale. The whole ending is completely silly, but whatever.
Fan-Fan la Tulipe is just stupid fun in the tradition of the swashbuckling films with Errol Flynn. It's not hysterically funny, but it left me with a smile on my face for most of the run time.
Les Visiteurs avant la lettre. Begins good and fun but ends like a John Wayne western.
