Task 23. A movie about or featuring a single dad
This is one of my absolute favorite French movies, one that I've seen countless times and could quote from beginning to end.
I've always had a thing for swashbuckling, and while Revenge of the Musketeers may not technically be the best, it's by far one of the must fun to watch. It's funny, charming, full of action, and perfectly paced. Philippe Noiret and Sophie Marceau are wonderful together in their father/daughter relationship.
As a young girl, Eloise D'Artagnan was one of my role models (she even inspired me to take fencing classes!) and many years later, I still have a deep fondness for this character.
Not everyone will love this movie as much as I do, but it's worth checking for fans of French period films and comedy.
Nice one, Letterboxd database. Both the French and UK titles of this film make it clear that the central character is D'Artagnan's daughter. So, very cool that you wipe the female protagonist from the title you've chosen...

Bertrand Tavernier’s surprisingly exciting Revenge of the Musketeers is an underrated period drama about the adventures of D'Artagnan’s reckless but high-minded daughter, Eloise. This was released a year after Disney’s The Three Musketeers, which is a rather uninspired blockbuster flick that had one thing going for it: the timeless theme song “All for Love”. Now I’ve seen a fair share of musketeer adaptations before but this the first time I’ve heard of Eloise. I’m not sure if she's even part of the Alexandre Dumas mythology, though I’m glad of her addition to the lore because Eloise is a fun character. I never thought I'd spend an evening watching two sequels of the 1970s Musketeers films, two sequels who were - by most of the critics - torn down - unnecessary. They're not as good as its predecessors, but there's a nice kind of energy and sincerity in them. C. Thomas Howell (The Return of the Musketeers) and Sophie Marceau (La fille de d'Artagnan) fit in the Musketeer-legends very well. I know it's got nothing to do with the three Musketeer novels anymore, but if you really read the book, the 1970s films weren't too strict regarding its sources either.
Please don't call your film The Daughter of D'Artagnan (the film's French title) and then have the titular character be captured, kept off-screen for an hour, and then get saved by a man every time she gets in a scrap - even in the climax! I can feel the money men in the background whispering "We can't have a WOMAN lead a swashbuckling film. It just wouldn't work. Remember what happened to Cuthroat Island?" Urgh. So instead, we get a great first act and a solid climax, with a different movie in the middle.

Musketeer farce with loopy, loping long-take swordplay. Count me in the camp that considers Tavernier's big costume productions to be his best works.
This needed a lot more of Sophie Marceau's cleavage to keep me invested. Hell, to keep me awake.

I regularly fall in love with women who are independent, who have their own opinions, who represent them confidently and who are not intimidated by anything or anyone. This is a quite good movie that frustrates because it's so close to being a great movie. A little more money for the action scenes, another pass of the script, and this could have been an all-timer.
The cast and the comedy here are great. The action is adequate, which is in itself a small achievement given the age of most of the non-Marceau Musketeers, but nothing more. The romance between Sophie Marceau and Nils Tavernier is a bit underbaked, but mostly played for laughs and unobtrusive.
Marceau is fantastic in the title role, and the movie is at its best when she's the main character. Philippe Noiret is also excellent as D'Artagnan, but the movie falls a bit too…
Delightful escapist yarn finds Eloise the daughter of the famous D'Artagnan rousing the retired musketeers back into action to thwart a plot against young prince Louis XIV. Or so she thinks after she and others misinterpret a laundry list covered in blood for a secret code! Philippe Noiret and Sophie Marceau are terrific in creating a sparring father-daughter relationship, while Luigi Proietti is a hoot as multitasking Cardinal Mazarin. Plenty of lively horseplay, wordplay, and swordplay to go around with Marceau in particular breaking some uncredited ground as an action heroine, performing all her fencing and nearly all her own stunts a couple years before the likes of Xena and Buffy debuted on American TV screens. Combining a reckless abandon with breathtaking beauty, she's simply great fun and a real joy to watch in this. Furthermore it's a movie about the famous Dumas Musketeers that's actually made in France by the French, what more could you ask for?
Tavernier makes this comedy swashbuckler look lovely- the opening sequence of horses chasing a man through the forest is a real knockout, the cast are game, Sophie Marceau is a spirited lead, and it is genuinely funny in parts.
However, it’s light as a feather and accordingly ends up leaving little impression.
Also, although Tavernier does a wonderful job of choreographing the equestrian action, the swordplay is incredibly limp and amateurishly staged which, even if it is mostly played for laughs, is a problem when you give over so much screen time to it.
