- Conifer, evergreen tree, slow growing, with pendulous branches to some degree or another. If staked it may reach a height of 8 ft (2.5 m) or more, with spreading, outward sweeping branches.
- Usually used as a specimen plant. Probably the most common cultivar of var. pendula is ‘Pendula’, which growing naturally is 45 cm high with a spread of up to 10 ft (3 m). Other similar cultivars include ‘Formanek’, ‘Inversa’, ‘Pendula Major’,‘Pendula Monstrosa’, and ‘Reflexa’. Some have argued that it is improper to name these weeping forms of Picea abies as cultivars since they were initially seedlings derived from weeping forms of the species. In this view they should be given a designation of forma pendula (f. pendula), that is Picea abies f. pendula, a pendulous form of Norway spruce.
