When Marton Kelemen and his group send me their bird list of species they were expecting to see in their 8 days western Kenya birding trip which was schedule to take place in late August and early September 2012, I was a little a bit baffle  by their expectation! Somehow, I told myself perhaps I should let them know that their expectation is a bit too high, as some species in their list were so rare and hard to come by!!!In fact some of my previous birding trips missed those species and we had learned to live with it!, then I said to myself, it wasn’t a crime after all to be optimistic!.

August 27, We started our trip slightly after mid-day and we went straight to Hells National Park where we spend the rest of the afternoon there. Hell’s Gate is probably the best place to observe swifts, among those we recorded included, Little, Horus, white-rumped, African Black , Nyanza and  Mottled Swift. We saw a roosting group of Rupples’ Griffon and White-backed Vulture, Lanner Falcon, Augur Buzzard, Verreaux’s Eagle, Northern Ant-eater Chat, Common Fiscal, White-fronted Bee-eater, Grassland Pipit and Pectoral-patch Cisticola among others.

It was then getting late for us and we had planned to travel all the way to Nakuru so that we were close to our next destination the next day. We stayed at Punda Millias camp in Soysambu conservancy . As we checked in at the camp, we were greeted by several calls of Montane Nightjar who spend the all night calling!!Amazing

August 28, We got up really early for our breakfast as we wanted to beat the traffic jam mostly witnessed at Lake Nakuru National Park main gate where clients have to wait for more than 40 minutes as their trip leaders clear with the Kenya wildlife service’s officials.   We spend the morning at Lake Nakuru, world famous for its vast flock of flamingos, pelicans, and a wealth of other waterbirds. In the acacia woodland around the lake, we managed to pocket few species like Arrow-marked and Black-lored  Babbler, Red-billed and African Firefinch, Black Cuckoo-Shrike,Hildebrandt’s Francolin, Violet-backed and Greater Blue-eared Starling, Golden-winged, Bronze, Green-headed  and Scarlet-chested Sunbird, Cliff Chat, Long-crested and Martial, Greater Painted Snipe and Long-tailed Widowbird  . Other than the bird we also saw Deffasa Waterbuck, White Rhino, Buffalo, Thomson’s and Grant,s  gazelle, Impala,Olive Baboon and Vetvet monkey. Since, we still have a long way to go we exited the park and head straight to Kisumu, stopping briefly for lunch at the base of Mau summit, around Londiani where we were lucky to record Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Hunters Cisticola and Chesnut-throated Apalis. Things got a little bit hard due to the road construction that was ongoing , the road to Kisumu was diverted and this made us arrive to Kisumu two hours late than we had earlier plan, we went straight to Hippo point where we were met by our local guide/boat man by the name Titus. An hour boat ride provided species like Swamp Flycatcher, Red-chested Sunbird, Carruther’s  Cisticola, Yellow-backed,Brown-throated, Slender-billed  and Black-headed Weaver ,Papyrus Canary and White-browed Coucal. We were however, Unlucky with the Papyrus Gonoleck, and the best we had was its call.

We left Kisumu for Kakamega and we arrived at Blue-shouldred Cottages which own and run by our guide to be Smith.

31 August,2012.  Kerio Valley, Tugen Hills and Lake Baringo

Today we left Kakamega forest for Lake Baringo, where we stopped briefly for lunch at Kerio View lodge. We had an impressive view of the Kerio Valley. From our hotel we spotted white-rumped swift and Rock Martin flying by before we were interrupted by excellent flight view of Lanner Falcon and Fan-tailed Raven. Down the valley we missed both our target species of Borana Cisticola and Chestnut-crowned Sparrow Weaver. Turning our visit in the valley more scenic with great view of Cheblouch gorge from above.

We ascended the Tugen hills where we made several stops as we started descending the eastern side of the hills. In our first stop, we saw without much effort the Mountain Wagtail. Surprisingly, our last stopped was impressively productive where we saw three species of Turacos . Ross’s, Hartlaub’s and White-crested Turaco. We arrived at Robert’s Campsite at around 7 pm where we were met by two giant Hippos grazing close to our Bandas. The water levels at the Lake was incredibly high and most of the cottages were in the lake!!!!.Just before we had our Dinner at the Thirsty Goat restaurant unexpected visitor just landed few meters from our Table!!African Scops Owl it was!!we went to bed satisfied of our day achievement knowing we had more to expect tomorrow.

1st September,2012. By six were up and we visited the western cliff nearby we recorded Little and Vitalline Masked Weaver, Black-throated  and D’Arnauds Barbet, Slender-tailed Nightjar, Heuglin’s Courser,Spotted Thick-knee,  Jackson’s weaver , Bristle-crowned Starling, Jackson’s Weaver, Mouse-coloured penduline-tit, Brown-tailed Rock Chat and Greyish Eagle Owl.

On a boat ride along the shores we saw Northen Masked, Jackson’s Golded-backed and Lesser Masked Weaver, Madagascar and Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, Straited , Little, Purple and Goliath Heron, Yellow-crowned Bishop, Little Bittern, and Allens Galinule.

After an early lunch we departed for Thomson’s Falls Nyahururu via Lake Bogoria National Park for the few Lesser Flamingo which were missing in Lake Nakuru. We also recorded Silverbird, Steel Blue Whydah, Black-headed Lapwing and Pygmy Falcon. At a round, 8 pm, we cheeked in our hotel, T-falls Lodge. The hotel was very spacious, but clearly its better days were behind it!!

2nd September, 2012. Today, we had plans to do the area around T-falls, and fresh water dam in the western part of the town, before we could leave for Mukuruweini  Valley in Nyeri. In the hotel grounds we saw Slender-billed Starling, Red-winged Starling and Sharpe’s Starling, Mountain Buzzard, Cinnamon-bracken Warbler, cape Robin Chat, Red-collared Widowbird .

In Mukuruweini Valley, our guide Kariuki managed to show us the elusive Hinde’s Babbler after a long search. Other than that we also recorded Red-faced and Singing Cisticola. Overnight stay at Green Hills Hotel, Nyeri.

3rd September,2012. We were at the Treetops gate of Aberdare National Park at 6:30 a.m. After clearing with the park official, we headed into Aberdare Mountains, where a good road took us above tree line into moorland habitat. As we ascend through mixed woodland, we saw Jackson’s Francolins along the road, and the songs of Brown Woodland Warbler was frequently heard. We also pocketed Doherty’s Bush Shrike,Grey Apalis, Kenrick’s Starling,Hartlaub’s Turaco, African-Hill Babbler, African Goshawk, Mountain White-eye.  We stop at the end of the road in moorland habitat above 10,000 feet. Alpine Chats were very common here and easily seen, and our search for patches of giant lobelias for our main specialty, Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird, was all in vain. We exited the park on the western part through Mtambio Gate. Where drove to Kinangop Grassland for the search of the endemic Sharpe’s Longclaw which we also missed, but we saw Levaillant’s Cisticola, African quail Finch, Common quail and Rufous-naped Lark. It was getting cloudy and late. So we decided to call it day and we drove to Nairobi where we arrived at round 8 pm. We had a farewell dinner, and some few beers to quench our thirsty before we drove  Jomo Kenyatta Airport at around 00:30 a.m for the outbound flight home.
