EUREKA HISTORY

Eureka Springs is one of the largest Historic Districts in Arkansas. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named it one of twelve Distinctive Destinations in America.

The city is passionate about preserving this treasure, and with good reason. The town was founded and named on July 4, 1879. Hundreds of Victorian homes have remained. Today, tiny cottages and elaborate mansions line the streets. Some are tucked into the mountains along with every other architectural style from mid-century classing (including a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian home) to contemporary and treehouses. There are 360 streets that wind around the town which intersect only once at a right angle. Sixty eight miles of 100+ year-old handstacked limestone walls line the town. There are no traffic lights. Along the entire downtown of Eureka Springs there are 14 properties listed on the National Register of Historic places and 27 listed in Carroll County.

Eureka Springs has historically been called “The Little Switzerland of America” and “The Stairstep Town” because of its European look, mountainous terrain and the winding, up-and-down paths of its streets and walkways. The Historic Loop has an alpine character with extensive streetscape dotted with springs, grottos and trails. Eureka Springs is also known as “The City that Water Built” because of the restorative and healing properties of its springs, which were once sacred to Native American tribes and attracted thousands of health-seekers.

Eureka Springs is also home to one of only four libraries in Arkansas in which Andrew Carnigie funded. Completed in 1912, this historical landmark continues to serve the residents and visitors of Carroll County today.

By late 1880’s, the estimated population of Eureka Springs reached nearly 5,000 people and in 1881 was declared not only a “City of the First Class,” but also the second largest city in Arkansas. There are countless historical focal points in town, including the 1929 Municipal Auditorium, opened by John Phillips Souza, the Eureka Underground (a civil war hospital), famed Abolitionist Carry Nation’s Home, houses of ill repute, Bath Houses, 5 historic hotels pre-dating 1906, and of course...the unique underground tunnel system built beneath the city.

WONDER WORLD

Zip in the sky, plunge to the underground, hop on a train, take in a show or go on a haunting trip for ghosts...It’s all here to do, see and experience in Eureka Springs! Among the ultra-unique attractions are Thorncrown Chapel, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, Opera in the Ozarks, ghost tours, Underground Eureka tours, Blue Springs Heritage Center, Intrigue Theater, War Eagle Mill, Eureka Springs School of the Arts, wineries, breweries, caves, castles, and so much more!

If you’re in the mood for entertainment, check out the headliners at the Historic Auditorium, the many clubs and show venues throughout town, art exhibits and demonstrations, plays and poetry slams. Visit the Holy Land, take in the Great Passion Play and take a backstage tour. If you just want to chill, visit our juice bars and coffee houses, and take in the local flavor and musical talent that Eureka Springs is known for around the country.

The Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway will take you on a delightful dining excursion complete with entertainment, history and sights only seen from the rails.

Basin Spring Park is the heartbeat of the town. On any given day or night, you can catch some free music in the park by well-known bands and muscians, stroll through an art show, participate in drumming in the park or just meet some of our colorful locals.

Throughout the year, Eureka Springs puts on some of the best music, art, food and automobile festivals in Arkansas. Our parades range from artrageous to historical and everything in between. We have a tendency to celebrate everything with a distinctive Eureka flare, and we welcome you to be a part of our celebration!

THE WET & WILD OUTDOORS

Eureka Springs is rich with natural resources, beauty and adventure. Tucked between Beaver and Table Rock Lakes, and close to the White, King and Buffalo Rivers, outdoor recreation is plentiful and diverse. Hiking, biking, swimming, boating, fishing, zip-lining, hunting, cave exploring, waterfall spotting and bird watching are favorite past times. Enjoy a scenic lake cruise and hear the history of Beaver Dam and the Ozark Bluff Dwellers or spend some time with the lions, tigers, and bears at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. Over 1800 acres of city park and land offer and up-close-and-personal look at wildlife, rare species and the wonders of nature. Eureka Springs is consistently singled out as one of the best places in the country to take in the fall colors.

One of the hottest things going in Eureka Springs is the miles and miles of multi-use trails for mountain biking, hiking and multi-sport competition. Lake Leatherwood Trails ramble through a 1600-acre park with and 85-acre spring-fed lake and features one of the largest hand-cut limestone dams in the U.S. The biking is excellent with trails that go from easy to advance with over 400 feet of elevation gain from the lowest trail to the highest. Many rocky ledges, steep slopes, extended grades, creek crossings and varied terrain make most trails challenging for both foot and bike traffic. Leatherwood is free, open all year and is an awesome place to camp, ride, boat and hang out. It also boast’s the only ‘true’ natural feature downhill in Northwest Arkansas and the trail system hosts the annual Fat Tire Festival.

There’s plenty of the great outdoors to take in just by staying in town. The in-town trail system will take you by many of our 65+ natural springs and pocket parks, the Harmon Park Rain Garden, The Native Plant Garden, and many of the historic sites and amazing architecture.

For an adrenaline rush, zip-line through the mountains or ski, scuba and stand up paddle board on beautiful Beaver Lake. For a more laid back experience, the White, King and Buffalo Rivers are ideal for floating, fishing or just taking in the natural beauty of the Ozarks.

PARKS & TRAILS

Eureka Springs is for outdoor lovers. Nestled in the Ozark Mountains, Eureka Springs is the perfect base camp for all types of outdoor activities. Flanked by the White and Kings River, (that both run north,) scenic float trips, swimming and world class fishing are all nearby. Within a 20 minute drive are two crystal clear highland reservoirs; Beaver Lake and Table Rock Lake. Both are known as excellent fisheries and offer many amenities.

Eureka Spring’s Lake Leatherwood City Park offers an 80 acre, spring fed lake in the middle of 1600 acres of rugged Ozark beauty. Originally built by the CCC, recent renovations have helped to bring the luster back to this gem. The park has boat rentals, excellent fishing, swimming, a large playground, camping, cabins, and nearly 25 miles of trails. Much of the trail system has hand cut single track that has been challenging and exhilarating hikers and mountain bikers for over 20 years.

Eureka Springs is an excellent place to stay for mountain bike enthusiasts, with over 200 miles of world class trails and bike parks within an hour’s drive. Part of the Oz Trails system that promotes “Year-Round Ozark Singletrack,” Lake Leatherwood is one of the original mountain bike trail systems in the state, second only to Devils Den State Park. The Fat Tire Festival and Race has been held at Leatherwood since 1998.

Eureka Springs is proud to be the home of some of the best mountain biking in Mid-America. From beginners looking for a scenic ride through one of the most beautiful parts of the country, to seasoned bikers looking for professionally developed routes, Eureka Springs and the Oz Trails system of Northwest Arkansas offer a huge variety of trails for mountain bikers of any experience level. There’s a trail for everyone in Eureka Springs!

Eureka Springs was founded by “health seekers”. Legend has it that Native Americans of the Osage discovered therapeutic relaxation and spiritual connectivity here from the ‘healing waters’ of our natural springs, the pure mountain air and locally grown and harvested foods. Word travelled fast that Eureka was the “Road to Health”. People from all over flocked to the town creating one of America’s most popular resort destinations - the first of its kind in the Midwest and Midsouth.

Rest, relax and rejuvenate by scheduling a spa treatment by one of our many professional health practitioners that combine new technology and techniques with traditional massage. Let off some steam by taking a steam or sauna. Go a bit deeper with aromatherapy, acupressure, acupuncture, facials, primordial sound medication, reflexology or just good ole exercise.

As a natural health conscious community, we are proud of our local Famers Market, natural food stores and herbal apothecaries and pharmacies.

And remember, this is not only good for you, it feels good too! A spa visit is a great way to release stress and it’s a wonderful way for couples to reconnect by enjoying a couple’s massage.
