In adult upperparts are violet blue and black forehead. Red coloured bill has black tip and yellow iris and eye-ring. In male a black eye stripe extending behind eye with stronger liliac suffusion on underparts. In juvenile bill is blackish and duller and greyer upperparts.

The chestnut-bellied nuthatch can be distinguished from the velvet-fronted by its chestnut underparts, and its distinctive, `chirrip chirrip...´ and `wheewheewheewhee...´ calls.
Behaviour
It prefers open deciduous forests and trees around villages, whereas the velvet-fronted nuthatch can be found in evergreen and moist deciduous forests and plantations. The call of the velvet-fronted nuthatch is a high pitched `chichichichichichi...´. Makes a variety of loud `wheeeow ´ calls and other buzzing notes.
