📚 Natural History
Reproduction
Breeding season: February in South India. April to June in the rest of the Indian subcontinent.
Courtship behaviour: Aerial displays with birds circling or showing swift undulating rollercoaster-like flight with a characteristic fluttering of wings at peak of the ascent.
Nesting site: Tree tops at a height of 6-28 metres above the ground.
Nest: Large stick platforms about 80cm in diameter and lined with leaves.
Clutch size: 2 eggs.
Eggs: Colour either white or buff bltched with red or chestnut brown.
Incubation period: 28-35 days.
Parental investment: Both sexes share parental duties.
Morphology
A large but slender kite with small head, narrow neck, long and broad wings and tail, small crest, and distinctive scale-like feathers around the eyes and forehead. Adults show extremely variable plumage colour and patterns, but in general they have a grey head, and greyish brown body above. Underwing coverts and underparts can range from white to rufous to dark-brown, and can be unmarked, streaked, blotched or mottled.
Sexes alike. Males have a greyer face, and darker brown iris. Females have browner face and yellow iris.
Juveniles have dark iris, yellow cere, finer and less distinct banding across undersides.
Behaviour
A very secretive bird, it is usually spotted only in their breeding season. Usually seen singly or in pairs soaring or perched on tree tops. Sometimes forms small flocks to roost or migrate in search of food.
It's call is a single high-pitched screaming whistle.
Juveniles mimic the larger Hawk Eagles, in their range, for protection against predation by larger raptors.
Trophic Strategy
Carnivore.
Feeds mainly on honey and the larvae, pupae and adults of socail bees, wasps and hornets from live combs. Occassionally will also feed on other insects like cicadas, reptiles, frogs, small young or injured birds and small mammals.
