Description | Spiked German helmet from World War I (1914-1918). 20th century. The pickelhaube (point or pickaxe bonnet) was worn in the 19th and 20th centuries by German military, firefighters and police. It is most closely associated with the Prussian army. Made of hardened (boiled) leather with a glossy black finish, reinforced with metal trim, usually plated gold or silver for officers, that included a metal spike at the crown. The front of the helmet has a large gold Prussian eagle with royal crown and with "FR" on its breast. The FR refers to Fredericas Rex (King Frederick of Prussia,1701). On the spread eagle, along with the "FR", the following is written in German: "MIT (With) GOTT (God) FUR (For) KOENIG (King) UND (And) VATERLAND (Country)." The eagle is holding a scepter in one claw and an orb with a cross in the other claw. |
