Only a few visitors know that the hill in the middle of the Castle District and on its northern parts is just as full of holes as Swiss cheese. The unique large travern cave system inside the Castle Hill evolved as the result of the thermal waters that rushed up from below and eroded a complex, winding pathway. Archeological excavations found ancient tools and weapons here which indicate that the caves were already used by caveman seeking protection as long as a half a million years ago. The natural caves were deepened in the Middle Ages, and a real underground city was established here, with a 10 kilometer corridor system. The caves were first ... up by Ottomans during their 16th century rule for military purposes and as such they proved to be useful later in similar circumstances. So during wars the caves were not merely a hiding place, but a suitable location for the army to regroup without being noticed. In peaceful times the cave system could be approached directly from the residential homes and was used as the storage place for food. But the route between the cave cellars was only built in the 1930s. As part of the preparation for the World War, an underground “town” was developed for the case of an air raid. Should shelter be needed, 10 thousand people could stay in the caves. It was equipped with its own water pipes, electricity and even a sewage system. The Castle Cave was strengthened by a ferroconcrete system, and by that time was closed off from residential homes. It was even considered as a secret military object during the time of the Cold War. But as the regime softened, most entrances were closed off and cultural initiatives were brought in to the caves instead. As recently as 2005, theatrical performances were held in the cave hospital. Today, there is an interesting exhibition set up in a 1200 meter long section which lies 16 meters below the ground. Limestone caves are generally cool and humid and this one is no exception. Water drips from the wall here and there and after heavy rains that can be like a shower in places. Journeys are arranged according to various themes and you can choose to take the ancient labyrinth, the other world labyrinth, or the courage labyrinth journey.
