Greeks Advised to Cancel Plans for Christmas, New Year Celebrations

Doctors all across the nation of Greece are warning the public to avoid gathering in crowds ahead of the approaching holiday season.
Christmas and New Years celebrations in Greece usually consist of large gatherings of friends and family for meals and festive parties. This year, however, the holidays will unfortunately have to be a bit different.
In light of the coronavirus, and the recent increase in cases in Greece, with 408 virus cases recorded in the country on Tuesday, doctors warn that holiday parties could cause major spikes in the number of cases and deaths.
According to Greek press reports, health workers are advising the Greek public that traditional holiday get-togethers will only be safe if Greece begins to record double-digit case numbers, instead of hundreds, each day.
Winter provides the perfect conditions for a mass spreading of the virus, as everyone keeps their windows closed during the cold er months.
This prevents the free circulation of air, increasing the possibility of transmission in crowded conditions, such as parties or on public transportation.
Additionally, the annual flu also spreads every winter, increasing the likelihood of two simultaneous health crises — an outbreak of both Covid-19 and the “regular” wintertime flu, which could cause an influx of patients in hospitals, overwhelming the country’s health system.
