Hyperoliidae – African Tree Frogs

The family Hyperoliidae or the African Tree Frog is found in Sub Saharan Africa, Madagascar, and some small islands. Most of the species are arboreal (living in trees) but the genus Kassina which is known as the running frogs

Acanthixalus is known as the African wart frogs

Afrixalus is known as the Banana Frogs.

Alexteroon is known as the Midwife Frogs.

Arlequinus only has 1 species, the Mebebque Frog(Arlequinus krebs). It is found in Cameroon.

Callixalus only has one species, the African painted Frog (Callixalus pictus)from Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Chrysobatrachus is known as the Itombwe golden frog (Chrysobatrachus cupreonitens). They are found in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Cryptothylax is known as the wax frogs.

Heterixalus is only found in Madagascar. The genus is called the Madagascan Reed Frogs.

Hyperolius is known as the African Reed Frogs.

Kassina is known as the running frogs. They walk more with their back legs than regular frogs.

Kassinula only has 1 species the De Witte’s Clicking Frog Kassinula wittei. Its found in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.

Opisthothylax only has 1 species the Greyed Eyed Frog (Opisthothylax immaculatus)

Paracassina is known as the Common Striped Frogs. They are found in Ethiopia.

Phlyctimantis is known as the African Striped Frogs.

Semnodactylus genus only has 1 species – the Weale’s running frog Semnodactylus wealii.

Tachycnemis genus is only found in the Seychelles Islands and it only has 1 species – Seychelle Islands Tree Frog, Tachycnemis seychellensis.
