The Deodar Cedar is a large evergreen tree that is native to the western Himalayan Mountains. It is pyramidal when young, maturing to a flat-topped tree with broad-spreading, horizontal branches. Deodar cedar is perhaps the most pendulous of the true cedars, with drooping branchlets and branching that is gracefully drooping at the tips. Lower branches typically remain on the tree as it ages, often touching the ground. This is a medium-growing tree that typically matures to 40-50’ tall in its first 25 years. In its native habitat, trees reportedly will grow much taller over time, sometimes reaching 150-200’ tall. Dark grayish-green needles (to 1.25” long) appear in clusters. Upright cones (to 4” long). Best grown in deep, moist but well-drained, acidic loams in full sun. Drought tolerant once established. Best tolerance of the true cedars for hot and humid summers. Garden Uses. Specimen tree for large lawns and as a screen or a hedge. Hardy in zones 7-8.

Growing Instructions for the Deodar Cedar

The seeds have a period of dormancy. They can be planted outdoors in the fall or winter for spring germination or they can be cold stratified to simulate winter conditions and to break their dormancy at any time of the year. The seeds need to be planted when received or stored in a refrigerator until they are planted. 1. Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours. 2. Put the seeds in a ziplock bag. 3. Put the bag in the refrigerator and leave it there for 2 weeks. 4. The seeds like moist, well-drained soil. Put some good quality potting compost in a container with drainage holes. 5. Sow the seeds on the soil. 6. Cover the seeds with a layer of soil. 7. Water the soil so that it is moist but not wet. Put the container in an area with light but not full sun. 8. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
