Within the release of the first few volumes of its light novel series back in the early 2010s, Overlord rose to prominence among fans and has been listed among the biggest fan-favorite Japanese works of all time. Written by Kugane Maruyama, it even went on to get adapted into a manga as well as a widely successful anime series. Then came the announcement of its anime film intervening with the fourth season of the anime.

However, nothing was known about this film for more than two years except that it would cover the Holy Kingdom Arc of the novel series. But that changed recently with the start of the new year as a special New Year program confirmed the opening of the film within this year, i.e. 2024, in Japan.

On the 1st of January, 2024, a special New Year Overlord program broadcasted on the Tokyo MX channel in Japan brought about the news of the Holy Kingdom Arc anime movie finally getting a release window after two years of being announced, as per the Anime News Network.

As shared by the hosts of the event — who are also notably the voice actors of the anime series — i.e. Satoshi Hino (Ains Ooal Gown), Yumi Hara (Albedo), and Masayuki Kato (Demiurge), the film will reportedly be premiering in Japan this year.

Unfortunately, no confirmed release date or cast and staff of the anime movie has been announced as of yet. Nonetheless, this news is just as good, considering how it was finally delivered to fans after waiting on it ever since the first announcement of its making back in 2021.

Back in May 2021, Hino, Hara, and Sumire Uesaka (Shalltear) announced the making of the fourth season of the anime as well as the anime film, all the while presenting messages from the anime director and script supervisor.

From then until now, everything that fans knew about the fourth season and the movie was that the fourth season would cover the 10th, 11th, and 14th volumes of the light novel series, while the anime film would be based on the 12th and 13th volumes of the series.

Although the fourth season holding 13 episodes earned its release within a year of its announcement, i.e. in July 2022, and even completed its airing within three months by September 2022, there were hardly any updates on the release of the anime movie up until recently.

What Will Overlord: Holy Kingdom Arc Cover?

According to the light novel series by Kugane Maruyama, Overlord: Holy Kingdom Arc would cover The Paladin of the Sacred/Holy Kingdom Part I, i.e. Sei Ōkoku no Sei Kishi (Jō), and The Paladin of the Sacred/Holy Kingdom Part II, i.e. Sei Ōkoku no Sei Kishi (Ge).

One of the major arcs in the entire series, the Holy Kingdom Arc covers the story of the demi-humans invasion against the Roble Holy Kingdom. Since this would be led by the Evil Lord Wrath variant Jaldabaoth, this threat would be more than merely dangerous for the Kingdom.

Thus, in desperate need of help during a war that could potentially damage their empire to a considerably destructive extent, the Holy Kingdom will be seen seeking the help of Momon in their war efforts in the anime movie, if it sticks closely to the source material.

So far, everything about the movie seems like the most perfect material for the Overlord fans, who can’t wait for the release of their much-anticipated film.
