In its six seasons, the series has killed off characters in ways that were moving (Juliet), spectacular (Frogurt!), and fundamentally significant (Jacob?!). Here, we honor the Island's fallen.

At its height, Lost was genuine appointment viewing. It was one of the rare shows that became so ubiquitous that everyone would discuss its oddities, twists, and half-truths the next day.

Part of its allure was the mystery — the winding narrative that was never willing to give you all the answers. The show also had an expansive cast and wasn't scared to kill characters even if they were beloved (Mr. Eko), seemed destined for plot armor (Boone), or were played by actors famous enough that you were certain they'd survive the island's perils (Michelle Rodriguez's Ana Lucia or Dominic Monaghan's Charlie).

C'est la vie on an island where you're as likely to see a plane crash as a polar bear. Here are 30 key deaths from Lost's six seasons.

1. Seth Norris (Greg Grunberg)

How: The pilot never made it past the pilot. After working with J.J. Abrams on Felicity and Alias, Greg Grunberg showed up in a cameo role on Lost as the man at the helm of doomed Oceanic Flight 815. Mario Perez/ABC

When: Season 3, Episode 5, ''The Cost of Living''
How: Killed off after just one season — actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje wanted off the show — Mr. Eko left a deep impression, and his story arc remains one of the most intriguing and complete sub-narratives in the show's long run. Initially, it seemed that Eko's path on the island was towards redemption: his dead brother Yemi kept prodding him towards a Locke-style belief in the Island's mystical powers. But Eko ended up refuting his brother, and declaring himself proud of his decisions, mistakes and all. Yemi revealed himself to be the Smoke Monster, turned into a big Smoky fist, and that was the end of Eko. —D.F.

How: A poisonous spider paralyzed Nikki and Paulo, but that was only step one in getting rid of two of the most disliked characters in Lost's history. The effects of the poison wore off, but it was too late. The pair was buried alive with their stolen bag of diamonds by the rest of the plane crash survivors, who presumed them to be dead. Although most viewers were glad to see them go, the horrifying way they died and the survivors' dawning realization that they knew very little about Nikki and Paulo was chilling and, let's face it, a little fun. (Yes, there are two people here, but they only count as one.) —V.G.
