That’s Captain McSteamy to you.

Former Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane has lined up his next role: Michael Bay’s post-apocalyptic TNT pilot Last Ship.

The project is based on a 1989 novel by William Brinkley and follows the crew of a naval destroyer who might be the only survivors left on the planet after a nuclear war. Dane will star as Captain Tom Chandler, described as “a career Navy man and a loving father and husband who’s never home as much as he’d like to be. Chandler is authoritative, decisive, fair, courageous and a born leader, respected and loved by men and women in his command.”

Hank Steinberg (Without a Trace) and Steven Kane (The Closer) wrote the pilot, which will be directed by Jonathan Mostow (U-571). Bay, Steinberg and Kane are all executive producers. Other cast members include Michaela McManus, Charles Parnell, Travis Van Winkle, Christina Elmore and Sam Spruell. Dane is leaving Grey’s Anatomy after six seasons on the medical soap hit.

If Last Ship gets a series order, it’s bound to draw comparisons to ABC’s similarly high-stakes nautical thriller Last Resort (which, ironically, is the new lead-in for Grey’s Anatomy).
