American astronaut Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, died at the age of 85, his family announced.
As part of the Apollo 14 mission in 1971, Mitchell spent more than nine hours on the surface of the moon, the BBC reports.
He said he experienced "enlightenment" in space and later devoted his life to studying the mind and unexplained phenomena.
He also believed that aliens had visited Earth.
