The ABCDEs of Melanoma

Melanoma

We can’t tell you how important it is to teach you about the ABCDEs of detecting skin cancer. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, however, early detection can help treat skin cancers effectively. Follow the ABCDEs for a self examination.

ASYMMETRY — one half unlike the other
BORDER — irregular, scalloped or poorly defined border
COLOR — varied from one area to another; shades of tan and brown; sometimes white, red or blue
DIAMETER — generally greater than 6mm (size of pencil eraser) when diagnosed, they can be smaller
EVOLVING — a mole or skin lesion that looks different or is changing in size, shape or color

Checking your skin is crucial in early detection. In conjunction with a self exam, visit your dermatologist for a skin exam. A dermatologist is trained in identifying skin cancers at their earliest stages. The earlier a dangerous spot is identified, the easier it is to treat. Many skin cancers can be treated in the office.
