To summarise the official description: The Lupercalia was an ancient Roman festival dedicated to the god Pan. Sacrificial goats would be skinned and strips of their hides were given to a pair of youths who would run around whipping people with them. This was supposed to bring fertility to the recipients. On reflection, those little blue tablets are probably more convenient... NOTE: In this set, since the boy's face is at 45 degrees to his lower torso, I was slightly confused as to how to describe the statue's orientation. I finally decided to base it on the lower torso - i.e., if his butt's facing the viewer it's a back view, etc. |
