Habitat:
- The ostrich is native to Africa’s open land. They inhabit the semi-desert or true desert
What they eat:
- They are omnivores and eat mostly plants, roots and seeds
- Insects, lizards and small rodents are also prey of the ostrich
Method of eating:
- Their food is collected in the crop at the top of the throat. When there is a large enough lump it gets slid down the throat
- They have extremely tough intestines that enable them to eat what other animals can’t digest
Physical Characteristics:
- The Ostrich species in the class Aves.
- It has 2 long, thick and powerful legs and the feet only have two toes
- They have wings that aren’t used for flying (they can’t fly), they use the wings to help balance when they run
- They have a long neck
- The feathers for the male are black and white, and females have grayish brown feathers
Behaviour:
- Ostriches live in smaller flocks of around 10 birds
- To show off to females, a male ostrich will hold his head up high and lift it’s wings and tail feathers
- Babies take a whole flock to raise: the whole flock lays their eggs in the same nest as the main hen’s eggs
- The females incubate the eggs during the day, and the males during the night.
