The wait is over, the exhibition of a complete goblin shark specimen, a deep-sea predator!!

On Friday 4th December 2020, a complete goblin shark immersed specimen was put on display.

The goblin shark inhabits the deep-sea at depths from 300 to 1000 meters. Its name comes from its frightening goblin-like appearance. It can rapidly thrust out its jaws to capture its prey (3.14 m/s). This is thought to be the fastest strike amongst fish. ※1

The 2.2-meter, female, goblin shark on display is a rare immersed specimen that allows observers to see the protruded jaws. The function of the specimen’s protruding jaws is explained on the panel. You can observe the powerful structure of the real thing.

1st floor of Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Journey into the Deep Sea

In 2016, the goblin shark specimen was caught by long-line fishing offshore off of Yaizu in Shizuoka Prefecture. In summer 2017, it was exhibited at the Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum for a special exhibit titled Amazing Creatures of The Ocean Exhibition. In winter 2017, it was part of the special exhibition Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium × GODAC Abyss Exhibition held at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.
