Variable, from spire-like to broadly pyrmaidal tree in youth, with a straight stem and horizontal branches spreading in whorls, stiff and twiggy, the young branchlets with the leaves crowded at the ends; with age the branches become more pendulous and spreading and the whole habit loose.

Monoecious; female solitary, terminal and subtended by a small bract, male flowers in 1 inch long racemes.

Seed, cuttings. Warm stratification is required for 100 days in most sand at 63 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit or for 90 days in moist, acid peat at 32 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
