February 11, 2023 - Southern Brown-throated Weaver (Ploceus xanthopterus)

Found in parts of southern and eastern Africa, these weavers live in wetlands and sometimes surrounding areas. They feed on grass seeds, berries, flowers, nectar, and insects, foraging in flocks. Breeding in colonies of up to 300 nests, males typically breed with two or three females. They build oval-shaped nests from strips of reeds, grasses, and bulrushes which females line with reed flowerheads and grass seedheads. Females incubate the eggs and feed the chicks alone.
